Resumen

We review a recent continuum description of nanostructure formation on the surfaces of solid targets that are eroded by irradiation with energetic ions (ion beam sputtering). The ensuing surface patterns evolve in macroscopic time scales, which allows for a description that exploits analogies to more familiar macroscopic patterns, such as ripples on the surfaces of sand dunes. The aim of the theoretical work is to derive a single evolution equation for the height of the target at each point. This type of interface equations provide compact descriptions of a variety of phenomena, and enable efficient analytical/numerical modelling of global morphological aspects
