Astrobiology: the origin of life as part of the evolution of the Universe. The new science of Astrobiology is presented as the search for the origins of life in the Universe, its distribution and relation with habitable environments. Scientific advance in this field is closely related to a trans-disciplinary approach, connecting basic disciplines like Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Geology. Furthermore, the development of advanced instrumentation, in order to explore extreme environments in our planet or the characterization of conditions for life in Mars and beyond, is an essential component of astrobiology, thus connecting with engineering capabilities as well as simulation tools, in specially designed chambers or laboratory experiments.
